Rio Tinto is a Founding Member of the Global Compact Network Australia, and represented on the GCNA Board.

Rio Tinto is a global leader in finding, mining and processing mineral resources, including aluminium, copper, diamonds, thermal and metallurgical coal, uranium, gold, iron ore and industrial minerals such as borax, titanium dioxide and salt. The company’s products help to fulfil vital consumer needs and improve living standards around the world.

Rio Tinto’s commitment to the UN Global Compact

Rio Tinto is a founding member of the UN Global Compact (UNGC), becoming a signatory in 2000. The UN Global Compact’s ten principles are reflected in Rio Tinto’s policies, standards and guidance and are embedded in the company’s overall approach to sustainable development.

Rio Tinto is committed to the principles and to promoting the UN Global Compact wherever we operate.

Rio Tinto is a member of both the Australian and UK networks, and communicates progress (COP) against all ten of the Global Compact Principles and are proud that its COPs have been deemed “notable” by the UN Global Compact office.

Rio Tinto’s target for global Communities and social performance work also contributes to supporting the company’s work in implementing the UN Global Compact principles. The five year target states:

“All operations have locally appropriate, publicly reported social performance indicators that demonstrate a positive contribution to the economic development of the communities and regions where we work, consistent with the Millennium Development Goals, by 2013.”
