Media Release: The United Nations Global Compact welcomes the appointment of Bob Carr as Australia’s new Foreign Minister

Matthew Tukaki, Australia’s Representative to the United Nations Global Compact has today welcomed the Prime Minister’s appointment of former New South Wales Premier Bob Carr to head up the Foreign Ministry. The United Nations Global Compact Network in Australia is the largest corporate citizenship initiative operating in Australia and makes a significant contribution in building and developing business and government engagement across the nation and the region:

“Bob Carr is an excellent choice for Foreign Minister and the Prime Minister should be congratulated for her decision. Australia faces a significant amount of opportunity when it comes to growing the networks of Australia throughout the global economy and also the Governments own commitment to multilateralism. At a time when a vast number of other countries are grappling with economic downturns and challenges, Australia has a chance to extend its leadership credentials when it comes to global trade and diplomatic programmes.” Mr Tukaki said

“In June of this year more than 150 Australian organisations and people will be attending the Rio+20 conference on sustainable development. We have a lot of challenges ahead of us, but Australia is playing a leadership role that I think can only continue under the stewardship of Bob Carr.”
