UN Global Compact launches Local SDG Pioneers initiative

The UN Global Compact has launched a new initiative to identify local business representatives and change-makers who are catalysing action to advance the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The ‘Local SDG Pioneers’ campaign will celebrate two kinds of Pioneers:

  1. Local business leaders and entrepreneurs who have demonstrated business success through advancing sustainable development – based on technologies, services or business models – in the country or region which is the primary base for their operations. This could include but is not limited to local leaders of a country division of a global company.
  1. Local change-makers who, through their work, have been advocates for sustainable development and actively mobilised local business beyond their own organisation or sector, in their country or region which is the primary base for their operations. This is also open to Global Compact participants from civil society and PRME schools.

Ten Pioneers (five from each category) will be selected, and will be invited to the UN Global Compact Leaders Summit (22-23 June 2016, New York). Two Pioneers will be selected for further opportunities.

Nomination Process

Any individual with an official affiliation to an active UN Global Compact participant organisation (both private sector and civil society) or PRME school can be nominated.

There are two nomination channels:

  1. self-nomination via the UN Global Compact website; or
  2. through the GCNA (or other Global Compact local network).

The deadline for self-nominations is 30 April. If you would like to put someone forward for consideration for nomination by the GCNA, the deadline is 15 April.
